MASTERPIECES STITCHED UP

A new dimension has been added to GUDRUN ROBINSON'S carpets and wall hangings, previously featured in GoodLife. She now creates tapestry interpretations of abstract paintings, working with Portuguese Arraiolos wools and a lockerhook (an ancient tool that is a combination of a needle and a crochet hook). This recent development was inspired last year at a fair in Loulé. Two potential customers enquired, independently, if Gudrun could create a wall hanging based on a Kandinsky painting. "It was such a coincidence to be asked the same question by two different people I decided I should try, " says Gudrun. The venture was a great success and she has now made tapestries of several other modern paintings, mostly of the Bauhaus period. It is certainly a unique way of owning an original version of your favourite masterpiece. An exhibition of Gudrun's recent work, including examples of her interpretations of Picasso, Paul Klee, Kandinsky and Govinder, can be viewed at the Galeria Municipal de São Brás (next to the cinema) from March 15th to 30th - 10am to 1pm and 3pm to 6pm on weekdays, mornings only on Saturdays.
